Lab-grown diamonds boast excellent quality and are visually indistinguishable from natural diamonds. In the early days of the technology, when synthesis methods were less refined, diamond dealers could easily identify lab-grown stones using a simple strong magnet; the magnets would attract the diamonds due to residual metallic inclusions left over from the growth process.
However, as lab-grown diamond technology has matured, these old methods are no longer effective. Distinguishing between synthetic and natural diamonds now requires specialized testing facilities and equipment. Given the high costs associated with the necessary technology and instrumentation, only a few laboratories worldwide possess the capability to perform this identification. Recently, a prominent U.S. producer of gem-quality lab-grown diamonds announced the launch of a jewelry line, with every stone requiring IGI certification before sale. Lab-grown diamonds are now available in sizes exceeding half a carat, with color grades of H or better and clarity grades of VS or better.
To protect consumer interests, certificates for lab-grown diamonds clearly state that the stones are synthetic and distinct from natural diamonds. Consumers should avoid the temptation of purchasing diamonds of unknown origin at bargain prices to prevent being misled or defrauded.
