An Introduction To Engagement Rings

An engagement ring is a ring given by a man to his girlfriend to signify their intention to marry; it serves as a clear symbol of their plans to wed.

An engagement ring is not strictly necessary to validate an engagement. While some people consider engagement rings just as essential as wedding rings, this is not the case. Wedding rings are a requirement for the wedding ceremony itself, whereas engagement rings merely serve as a tangible sign of the couple's intent to marry. A man can present a ring to his fiancée regardless of how many times he may have been engaged previously.

Regarding the origins of engagement and wedding rings, it is said that they evolved from the ancient practice of marriage by capture; in those times, a man would place shackles on a woman he had abducted from another tribe. Over the course of many years, these shackles evolved into engagement and wedding rings-with the man placing the ring on the woman to signify that she now belonged to him. Another theory suggests that the first person in the world to use a ring as a token of engagement was the Austrian Archduke Maximilian.
